Also, I find that showing my artwork to my mom's friends and friends of mine not from school works very nicely
And don't mention commissions, just show them what you can even do. They have to be interested to begin with, it won't do any good to tell some dude who's into cars and power tools that you'll draw a Pokemon if he pays for it.
Scout out your target audience before you even think about dropping prices. Just tell them how you had a piece of art in a restaurant, show them, tell them you've always been doing art and that you have lots of other stuff you've done like that, and then if they seem sufficiently interested start mentioning how you've sold your art at Kawaii Kon and stuff. Then tell them the kinds of things you sold there. Mainly just ease them into it and make it interesting. It's a lot easier to commit money to something if you know a little more about its background and history.
And most of all, even though you're talking about your art, make them the focus of it. It's their money getting them a picture of what they want!
